Course objectives
Legal documents, industrial property documents (trademarks, patents, etc.) and norms are special documents whose search requires not only an overview of specialized information resources but also the specific characteristics of these documents that are used to refine the search query. The aim of the practical course is to teach students to make specialized searches in the field of these documents, which can be used both in specialized and academic libraries (eg Library of the Constitutional Court, Justice Library, Law Faculty Libraries) as well as in the commercial sphere. The course focuses on the Czech and European environment.
Learning outcomes
Student will be able to:
- orientate in types of legal documents, industrial property documents and norms and describe their characteristics;
- orientate in different information resources of these documents with a focus on electronic information resources;
- search for legal documents, industrial property documents, and norms.
- process a professional search of these documents.
Syllabus
  • Course is done in a computer classroom:
  • 1. Legal documents, their typology and characteristics, searches in open information resources (eg Acts for People, NALUS, databases of judgments, EUR-Lex, Curia - Case-law of the Court of Justice);
  • 2. Searching legal documents in the legal information system (ASPI, Beck-online, CODEXIS);
  • 3. Search for industrial property documents (eg IPO database, European Patent Office, European Union Intellectual Property Office EUIPO, World Intellectual Property Organization WIPO);
  • 4. Searching for norms (Czech Office for Standards, Metrology and Testing, International Organization for Standardization).

Teaching methods
Theoretical preparation, practical tasks, active discussion.
Assessment methods
Attendance is compulsory due to the practical concept of the course. Students have to prepare the searches processed at meetings and engage in a discussion of the process. The colloquium consists of elaborating the assigned task and discussing the process.
