Course objectives
The course points to the connection of beautiful literature and cultural area as a whole, which includes culture in a broad sense, including various types of art on spatial / areal, comparative and genre (species) basis.
After the introductory theoretical exposition, attention is paid to mutual relations of Czech cultural area with various cultural areas, especially European ones.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course student:
- knows the phenomena of field studies, literary comparatism and literary genology;
- understands the connection of beautiful literature and the cultural area as a whole, on a spatial / areal, comparative and genre (species) basis;
- knows the issues of the history of the Czech cultural area and its interpretation;
- knows the issues of coexistence of cultural areas, especially in Europe;
- knows issues of using and sorting of literature from a wide range of area studies.
Syllabus
  • Areal studies, literary comparatistics and literary genology as a starting point. Spatial dimension of literature, European cultural areas and the area of Central Europe.
  • Relations of the respective cultural areas to the Czech area: Antique, Slavonic, German-speaking; Romance, English-speaking.
  • Conclusory reflexion of themes.

Teaching methods
The course is based on lectures, it also involves discussions and individual work of students. It contains explanations of historical development, as well as the work with texts of primary and secondary literature and their fragments.
Assessment methods
An active approach to the topic, writing the seminar paper, passing the exam.
