Course objectives

The aim of the course named Introduction into Religion in Japan is a general introduction into history and development of religion in Japan. Various religious traditions that have found its way into Japan and have affected the shaping of distinct Japanese religious thought shall be addressed throughout the course. The primal objective of the course shall be the individual growth and mutual development between Shinto and Buddhism in course of Japanese history.

Learning outcomes

After a successful completion of the course, student will be able to:
- distinguish between the various religious traditions in Japan;
- critically analyze specific Japanese religious phenomena;
- identify the founders of Japanese Buddhist schools;
- identify fundamental characteristics of Japanese religious traditions;
- identify basic objects and architectural monuments related to Japanese religiosity.

Course objectives

The aim of the course named Introduction into Religion in Japan is a general introduction into history and development of religion in Japan. Various religious traditions that have found its way into Japan and have affected the shaping of distinct Japanese religious thought shall be addressed throughout the course. The primal objective of the course shall be the individual growth and mutual development between Shinto and Buddhism in course of Japanese history.

Learning outcomes

After a successful completion of the course, student will be able to:
- distinguish between the various religious traditions in Japan;
- critically analyze specific Japanese religious phenomena;
- identify the founders of Japanese Buddhist schools;
- identify fundamental characteristics of Japanese religious traditions;
- identify basic objects and architectural monuments related to Japanese religiosity.

Course objectives

The aim of the course named Introduction into Religion in Japan is a general introduction into history and development of religion in Japan. Various religious traditions that have found its way into Japan and have affected the shaping of distinct Japanese religious thought shall be addressed throughout the course. Cieľom kurzu Úvod do náboženství v Japonsku je všeobecné uvedenie do problematiky, dejín a vývoja japonskej náboženskej situácie. V priebehu kurzu budú predstavené rozličné náboženské tradície, ktoré sa spolupodieľali na utváraní náboženského myslenia Japoncov. Hlavný dôraz bude kladený na špecifiká šintó a buddhizmu, a ich vzájomnú interakciu v priebehu dejín. Východiskom pri výuke bude historický prehľad a priebeh utvárania japonského náboženského myslenia s prihliadaním na rôznorodé charakteristiky jednotlivých buddhistických škôl v Japonsku.

Vyučovanie prebieha formou prednášok, ktoré sú kombinované s audiovizuálnymi prezentáciami a rozpravami so študentmi na zadané témy. Od študentov sa vyžaduje samostatná práca s odbornou literatúrou.

Záverečné hodnotenie bude prebiehať vo forme písomného testu alebo eseje na tému, ktorá bude odsúhlasená a priebežne konzultovaná s vyučujúcou. Rozsah eseje je 8NS v prípade slovensky písanej práce, 6NS v prípade anglicky písanej práce.

Course objectives

The course aims to develop the understanding of religious traditions in Japan. It offers introduction to the topic of contemporary religious life together with the basic survey of historical development of Japanese religious traditions. The classes are aimed to give the outline of social and cultural contexts of Shinto, Buddhism, Christianity, new religious movements and so called popular religious traditions. The original audio-visual documentation and other fieldwork material constitute the essential element of the lectures.
At the end of the course students will be able to
define the main characteristics of religious traditions in Japan;
locate the main characteristics of religious traditions in Japan to the broader social, social and historical context;
interpret religious traditions of Japan according to theoretical and methodological approaches of the Study of religions;
distinguish the principal stages in historical development of religious traditions in Japan;
formulate the cardinal principles of „lived religion“ or practical religious life in history and present times.

Course objectives

The course aims to develop the understanding of religious traditions in Japan. It offers introduction to the topic of contemporary religious life together with the basic survey of historical development of Japanese religious traditions. The classes are aimed to give the outline of social and cultural contexts of Shinto, Buddhism, Christianity, new religious movements and so called popular religious traditions. The original audio-visual documentation and other fieldwork material constitute the essential element of the lectures.
At the end of the course students will be able to
define the main characteristics of religious traditions in Japan;
locate the main characteristics of religious traditions in Japan to the broader social, social and historical context;
interpret religious traditions of Japan according to theoretical and methodological approaches of the Study of religions;
distinguish the principal stages in historical development of religious traditions in Japan;
formulate the cardinal principles of „lived religion“ or practical religious life in history and present times.

• 1. History, geography of Japan. Studying religions in Japan – introduction;
• 2. „Normative“ and „lived“ religion in Japane. Classifying religions in Japan, relationship of Shinto and Buddhism - mutual influence, religions in everyday life. Ancestor worship;
• 3. Shinto - mythology, deities - kami, rituals, Shinto and the concepts of Japanese nation;
• 4. Buddhism in Japan – introduction;
• 5. Buddhism in Japan – iconography, rituals, kuyo rites;
• 6. Shugendo;
• 7. "Christianity made in Japan" - past and present;
• 8. New and "new new" religions I;
• 9. New and "new new" religions II;
• 10. Religious festivals and ceremonies;
• 11. Film and religions in Japan;
• 12. Final review, discussion.

Course objectives

The aim of the course named Introduction into Religion in Japan is a general introduction into history and development of religion in Japan. Various religious traditions that have found its way into Japan and have affected the shaping of distinct Japanese religious thought shall be addressed throughout the course. The primal objective of the course shall be the individual growth and mutual development between Shinto and Buddhism in course of Japanese history.

Learning outcomes

After a successful completion of the course, student will be able to:
- distinguish between the various religious traditions in Japan;
- critically analyze specific Japanese religious phenomena;
- identify the founders of Japanese Buddhist schools;
- identify fundamental characteristics of Japanese religious traditions;
- identify basic objects and architectural monuments related to Japanese religiosity.

Course objectives

The aim of the course named Introduction into Religion in Japan is a general introduction into history and development of religion in Japan. Various religious traditions that have found its way into Japan and have affected the shaping of distinct Japanese religious thought shall be addressed throughout the course. The primal objective of the course shall be the individual growth and mutual development between Shinto and Buddhism in course of Japanese history.

Learning outcomes

After a successful completion of the course, student will be able to:
- distinguish between the various religious traditions in Japan;
- critically analyze specific Japanese religious phenomena;
- identify the founders of Japanese Buddhist schools;
- identify fundamental characteristics of Japanese religious traditions;
- identify basic objects and architectural monuments related to Japanese religiosity.

Cieľom kurzu Úvod do náboženství v Japonsku je všeobecné uvedenie do problematiky, dejín a vývoja japonskej náboženskej situácie. V priebehu kurzu budú predstavené rozličné náboženské tradície, ktoré sa spolupodieľali na utváraní náboženského myslenia Japoncov. Hlavný dôraz bude kladený na špecifiká šintó a buddhizmu, a ich vzájomnú interakciu v priebehu dejín. Východiskom pri výuke bude historický prehľad a priebeh utvárania japonského náboženského myslenia s prihliadaním na rôznorodé charakteristiky jednotlivých buddhistických škôl v Japonsku.

Cieľom kurzu Úvod do náboženství v Japonsku je všeobecné uvedenie do problematiky, dejín a vývoja japonskej náboženskej situácie. V priebehu kurzu budú predstavené rozličné náboženské tradície, ktoré sa spolupodieľali na utváraní náboženského myslenia Japoncov. Hlavný dôraz bude kladený na špecifiká šintó a buddhizmu, a ich vzájomnú interakciu v priebehu dejín. Course objectives

The course aims to develop the understanding of religious traditions in Japan. It offers introduction to the topic of contemporary religious life together with the basic survey of historical development of Japanese religious traditions. The classes are aimed to give the outline of social and cultural contexts of Shinto, Buddhism, Christianity, new religious movements and so called popular religious traditions. The original audio-visual documentation and other fieldwork material constitute the essential element of the lectures.
At the end of the course students will be able to
define the main characteristics of religious traditions in Japan;
locate the main characteristics of religious traditions in Japan to the broader social, social and historical context;
interpret religious traditions of Japan according to theoretical and methodological approaches of the Study of religions;
distinguish the principal stages in historical development of religious traditions in Japan;
formulate the cardinal principles of „lived religion“ or practical religious life in history and present times.

Course objectives

The course aims to develop the understanding of religious traditions in Japan. It offers introduction to the topic of contemporary religious life together with the basic survey of historical development of Japanese religious traditions. The classes are aimed to give the outline of social and cultural contexts of Shinto, Buddhism, Christianity, new religious movements and so called popular religious traditions. The original audio-visual documentation and other fieldwork material constitute the essential element of the lectures.
At the end of the course students will be able to
define the main characteristics of religious traditions in Japan;
locate the main characteristics of religious traditions in Japan to the broader social, social and historical context;
interpret religious traditions of Japan according to theoretical and methodological approaches of the Study of religions;
distinguish the principal stages in historical development of religious traditions in Japan;
formulate the cardinal principles of „lived religion“ or practical religious life in history and present times.

Course objectives

The course provides the introduction to Buddhism as a religious system. It treats the topic of the three jewels: Buddha, dharma and sangha. The course also provides the introduction to the history and teaching of early Buddhism and to the life of Buddha Shakyamuni.
