Course objectives
The aim of this course is to introduce students to political and cultural history of Slovenes and the area of today´s state of Slovenia, from the ancient times till beginning of 21st century. Also the history of Czech-Slovene relations in political, cultural and economic field will be discussed briefly.
Learning outcomes
By absolving this course, students will extend their knowledge about the history and cultural development of this area and at the same time for more complex, comparative-oriented studies. They will learn how to look at Slovenes as an independent and from cultural perspective very interesting and active nation, and to understand geopolitical, economic and cultural bonds between Slovenia and the rest of Europe.
Syllabus
  • 1. Area of today´s state of Slovenia in the pre-Slav era (Celts, Romans, Germanic tribes)
  • 2. Slovene lands in the Middle Ages (so-called Alpine Slavs, Slav Carantania, historic lands in the Southern Alps, grafs from Celje
  • 3. Era of reformation in the Slovene area, creation of Slovene literary language, era of Counter-Reformation
  • 4. Turn of 18th and 19th century - the beginning of national revival of Slovenes
  • 5. Revolution 1948 - 1949: Formulation of Slovene national and political programme, cultural, political and economic development of Slovenes in Habsburg Monarchy at the turn of 19th and 20th century
  • 6. Slovenes during the First World War, creation of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes in 1918
  • 7. Slovenes in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia during the Second World War
  • 8. Slovenes and Slovenia as a part of the Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia
  • 9. Dissolution of Yugoslavia and the Slovene way to independence
  • 10. Becoming a part of European and Transatlantic structures at the turn of 20th and 21st century
  • 11. Overview of the Czech-Slovene contacts and relations

Teaching methods
This course combines lecture and seminar part. Students will prepare papers based on the given topic for the seminars. There will be a discussion about these papers during the seminar.
Assessment methods
Prerequisites for granting the credit: Regular attendance on lectures, writing and presenting the paper, active participation on seminaries. Proving good knowledge of the matter during oral exam.
