Course objectives
This course deals with the so-called Eastern Question, that means the problem of Ottoman legacy in Europe. Eastern Question was the lasting and main diplomatic challenge of 19th century in Europe. Residua of this problem are visible even today. Both events Balkan countries and superpower politics is being discussed during lectures. Students will be introduced to overview of Eastern Question evolution since the Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca in 1774 till Congress of Berlin (South Slavonic uprisings against Turks, attempts to reform Ottoman Empire, thoughts of Balkan federation and Slavonic intercommunity is being mapped). It notices Berlin Congress and the subsequent situation of Balkan nations. Lectures will also focus on period between Congress of Berlin and the First World War, Macedonian Question and Albanian Question, as well as the era preceding Balkan Wars, that meant a final solution to the Eastern Question. Aim of this course is to deepen common knowledge of history both of South Slavic nations and non-Slavic nations of Balkans.
Learning outcomes
Student should be able to understand and explain the causes of ethnical tensions taking place in Balkan Peninsula, ensuing from the approach of European powers to the resolution of the Eastern Question.

  • 1. Russo-Turkish and Austro-Turkish wars and peace Treaty of Kuchuk-Kainarji. Development in administrative system in European Turkey, Turkish economic situation and reforms done by Turkish sultans. Insurrection of rebellious Pashas. 2. Serbian Uprisings and Greek crisis. Policy of European powers against the Turkish Porta. 3. First eastern crisis. Hatihumajun. Ideas of Balkan federation and Slavonic alliance. 4. Fight for Bulgarian church and Bulgarian Uprisings. 5. Great Eastern Crisis and Congress of Berlin. 6. Progress in Macedonian Question. 7. Armenian slaughters and policy of European powers against Balkans in eighties and nineties of 19th century. 8. Ilinden Uprising and Young Turkish Revolution. Annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. 9. Albanian Question. 10. Balkan Wars. 11. Conclusion: Consequences of European powers policy in Balkans for its further development. Residua of Eastern Question nowadays.
