Course objectives
The aim of the Academic and Presentation Skills course is to help students to improve their academic skills. It will complement their work in the Academic Writing course, JSFF_AP1, and students are therefore strongly encouraged to register for both courses. The course also helps students to improve their oral presentation skills. Extensive feedback is provided on written assessments. Peer review is part of the feedback and learning process as well.
Learning outcomes
- Students will be able to outline, construct, and present structured and persuasive academic arguments and texts in a manner appropriate to the subject, occasion, and audience. - Students will know what is involved in the composition of academic abstracts, proposals, articles, and presentations and will be able to outline and prepare such texts - Students will be able to synthesize scholarly research, employ analytical reading skills to compose persuasive arguments, demonstrate personal responsibility by ethically citing sources, and will know how to use academic styles relevant to their field. - Students will know how to provide feedback and peer review in academic contexts - Students will know how to revise and edit various types of academic texts to achieve clarity; meet the standards of appropriate style and conventions of edited global English, including grammatical correctness, appropriate word choice (diction), usage, clear and concise sentence structure, and punctuation.
Syllabus
  • Primarily Academic and Presentation Skills provides participating students with guidance on: • how to present clear, well-structured arguments • how to outline and structure paragraphs, abstracts, papers, and presentations • how to better engage with and reference the ideas of others • how to think critically, and how to express ideas in an appropriately formal manner • how to distinguish between registers in spoken and written in English • how to properly cite and reference scholarly materials according to the most common citation styles in areas typical of CEITEC research interests • how to use punctuation as well as coherence and cohesion devices Overall, Academic and Presentation Skills focuses on: • the research/ writing process • writing abstracts, summaries, proposals • outlining • scholarly article structure • presentation skills • the integration of and engagement with academic sources • critical thinking • academic writing style and language as an extension of the Academic Writing course, JSFF_AP1
