Course objectives

Students of classical archaeology in the study program minor are required to pass at least 2 weeks of practical training on archaeological excavations during their studies. It is recommended to take part in the excavations of the Institute of Department of Archaeology and Museology Faculty of Arts Masaryk University (sites - Priniatikos Pyrgos, Oxa, Bibracte, Těšetice, Pohansko), possibly in the excavation of cooperating institutions - The Institute of Archaeology of the CAS, Brno (site Mušov and its background).

Learning outcomes

After successfull passing the course, students will be able to:
- excavate the fundamental archeological field situations
- participate on the field documentation (drawing and photographic) and provide basic geodetic survey
- arrange primary registration and basic laboratory treatment of the excavated materials, or obtain their primary documentation

Syllabus

• - excavations and fundamental interpretation of the field situations
• - documentations of excavated situations (drawing, photographic documentation, total station measuring)
• - fill the required informations in field forms
• - Post-excavation and laboratory works (sorting, cleaning and inventorying of the archaeological artefacts)
• - primary description, documentation and cataloguing, recording into the databasis
