Course objectives
This course will introduce students to a wide range of relations between Romans and non-Romans/barbarians along the Roman frontiers from the last years of the Republic to the Late Antiquity, from the early encounters between Romans and barbarians to the spread of barbarians over the area of the Roman Empire. The partial objective of the course is to introduce and define the main customary types of mutual contacts, such as trade, political relations or war conflicts, and show a wider context of their development from mutual ignorance, hostility and suspiciousness to tolerance, acculturation, integration and transformation into a new Romano-barbarian culture and society of early medieval times.
