Course objectives
The aim of the course is to understand the history of Byzantine Empire. The subject matter is divided into four chapters of development.
Learning outcomes
Basic knowledge of Byzantine history.

  • Late Antiquity or Early Byzantium? The problem of continuity or discontinuity of historical development
  • Byzantine „Dark Age“ – transformation of East-Roman society
  • Extinction, decline or transformation of cities?
  • Slavic expansion to the Balkans
  • Byzantium and Great Moravia: Cyrillo-Methodian Mission between Constantinople and Rome.
