Course objectives
At the end of this course students should be able to be acquainted with basic methodology of the classical archaeology and use it. Principal topics of this knowledge: Definition and specialised investigative methods Overview of history and evolution of Classical Archaeology from antiquity to the 20th century; basic literature, an overview of specialized journals and collected publications of Classical documents, encyclopedias, citations (use of abbreviations). Overview of greek topography in the antiquity. Overview of important museums with classical collections, their structure.
Syllabus
  • The definition, explication and overview of methodology, history and aims of Classical Archaeology; acquaintance with specialised terminology, overview of the basic literature and of specialised journals and collected publications of Classical documents; typology of vases, architecture and their terminology, topography of Greece, iconography of greek mythology. The most important World's museums with classical collections. Conception of Classical Archaeology and evolution of its history from the 18th century to our time. lectures supplemented by presentations of methodological sources and archaeological materials and illustrations.
Assessment methods
Fullfilment - Requirements for oral examination: - Achievement of the basic orientation in the individual spheres of research in the branch of Classical Archaeology and its methodology - Knowledge of specialised literature, journals and outcomes of the work of significant researchers within the scope of the lecture and the assigned literature - Adequate participation in the work of the proseminar - oral exam which also includes the overview of the topics of the proseminar to the classical archaeology
