Course objectives
At the end of this course the students should be able to be acquainted with: • the materials of Hellenistic and Roman glyptics • the engraving techniques • the origin and development of “Staatskameen” • the purposes of “Staatskameen” • the afterlife of “Staatskameen” after antiquity: reworking and reuse

  • Subjects of the lessons (ten 2-hour lessons): 11. Materials, techniques and sources for the study of ancient glyptics 12. Alexandria and the birth of the “Staatskameen”: precious stone vessels and the “Ptolemies’ Cup” and other related 13. From Alexandria to Rome: the “Tazza Farnese” 14. Iconographical schemes in Hellenistic and Roman “Staatskameen”. Capita iugata and capita opposita: the “Ptolemies’Cameo” and the “Cammeo Gonzaga” 15. Julio-Claudian Staatskameen: the “Gemma Augustea” and the “Gemma Claudia” 16. Julio-Claudian Staatskameen: the “Grand Camée de France” 17. The last Roman “Staatskameen” 18. Hellenistic royal portraiture in the round in precious stones 19. Roman imperial portraiture in the round in precious stones 20.
