Course objectives
The seminar is focused on the reconstruction of the phonological development of Ancient Greek. At the end of this course students should be able to describe the development of Greek, distinguish dialectical and stylistic features; identify the origin of vowels and consonants.
Syllabus
  • 1.Development of Greek in space and time: dialectical, stylistic and diachronical differences; diachronic versus synchronic methodological approach.
  • 2. Phonetic inventory of Ancient Greek during the Antiquity - a survey.
  • 3.-4. The vocalic system of Ancient Greek: the origin of Greek vowels and diphthongs and their further development.
  • 5.-7. The main phonic tendencies provoking the origin of new vocalic realizations (monophthongization of diphthongs, contractions, compensatory lenghtenings).
  • 8.-9. The consonantic system of Ancient Greek: the origin of Greek consonants and their further development (the plosives and the continuants separately).
  • 10.The main phonic tendencies provoking the origin of new consonantic realizations (e.g. spirantization of plosives).
  • 11-12. Parts of speech in Ancient Greek; analysis of the nominal categories (gender, number, case).
