Course objectives
At the end of the course, students should understand the practice of Chinese popular beliefs. They will be able to use the acquired information as to recognize the analogies within the present Chinese society. They will be able to interpret the spiritual values of the traditional society, as well as to judge its possible (dis)continuity.

  • ancestral worship • family rites III: funeral • sacrificial feast and ceremonies • domestic gods • other religious practices eg. paramedicine, divination, fengshui • official policy towards popular rites in the 20th century
