Course objectives
Students will be informed about the basic genres of medieval Latin literature and will become acquainted with the most important periods, authors and treatises of both European and Czech Latin literature of the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period. Special emphasis will be put on the literary developments in the 13th century; on specific features of literary developments in Bohemia, and on renaissance and humanism period in medieval Czech Latin literature up until the oeuvre of J. A. Comenius.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students will have a deeper understanding of the relation and continuity between the Ancient (Latin) and Medieval literary cultures and will be able to explain it in the overall cultural and historical context. They will be able to describe literary contours of the learned 13th century, they will understand the nature of the Renaissance humanism and will be able to outline specific literary development in the Czech milieu, including the humanism period up until the emerging baroque period.
Syllabus
  • Literature of the 13th century – main currents and selected authors of the intellectual life (Albert the Great, Thomas Aquinas, Jacques de Vitry, Thomas of Cantimpre, Bartholomeus Anglicus, Johannes de Garlandia, Roger Bacon, Bonaventure etc.).
  • Czech Latin medieval literature - hagiography and historiography.
  • Czech Latin medieval literature - specialized and edifying prose and poetry.
  • Characteristics of the so-called European Renaissance, its beginnings in individual European countries.
  • The most important authors of the European Latin literature (Petrarch, Boccaccio, Poggio Bracciolini, Lorenzo Valla, Conradus Celtis, Erasmus of Rotterdam, Phillip Melanchthon etc.).
  • The most important authors of the Czech Latin literature of humanistic period (Bohuslav Hasištejnský of Lobkovice, Řehoř Hrubý of Jelení, Augustin of Olomouc, Jan Campanus of Vodňany, Jan the Elder Hodějovský of Hodějov, Tadeáš Hájek of Hájek etc.).

Teaching methods
Lectures, seminar discussions, presentation of a selected literary treatise.

Regular and active class participation. Written test aimed at testing student's insight into the topics discussed during lectures.
