Course objectives
The aim of the course is to make students familiar with palliate, one of the Roman comic genres, and give them a general overview of translating Classical plays for stage. Besides attending the lectures, students will have opportunity to take part in the rehearsals of a concrete play by Plautus, the as-yet-untranslated “Curculio”.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to the course; brief introduction to Classical Roman theatre and drama (genres, staging, characteristics of palliate).
  • 2. Plautus as a playwright (adaptation strategies, stock elements of plots, language); the Plautinopolis or The omnipresent discourse of Law and the conglomerate of Greek and Roman in Plautus’ plays.
  • 3. Translating Roman comedy for stage (strategies and possibilities – philological vs. theatre translation, substitution, anticipated ostension; analysis of selected scenes from “Curculio”).
  • 4. Stock characters of palliate; characters of “Curculio”; casting the roles and technical staff.
  • 5.–12. Rehearsing the play; discussing the translation variants.
