Prerequisites
In order to be admitted to the Bachelor's state examination, a student must
a) gain credits prescribed by his or her study plan;
b) submit Bachelor’s thesis, if he or she is a student of major or single-study (completus) study plan.

Course objectives
The aim of the Bachelor's state examination is to prove whether a student have reached learning outcomes of the Bachelor's programme Latin Language and Literature as prescribed by his or her study plan.
Learning outcomes
A successful student should be able to:
understand classical Latin texts;
translate text of selected classical Latin authors into Czech;
identify Latin morphological and syntactic phenomena used in classical Latin and describe them by means of linguistic terminology; analyse the structure of Latin sentence; translate shorter sentences into Latin;
analyse and read hexameter poetry and other ancient metrical structures;
identify basic stylistic and poetic devices used in Latin texts;
characterize the works of the most important Latin authors; explain the development of ancient literature and the dependence of Roman literature on Greek literature;
specify the main features of basic literary genres in ancient literature;
give an account of the cultural and historical background of the ancient world;
describe methodological approaches used in classical philology.

Requirements differ according to the study plan chosen by the student.
Syllabus
  • Contents of the Bachelor's state examination
  • 1. Detailed knowledge of Latin grammar studied in the courses Latin Grammar I-IV (minor study plan) or in the courses Latin Grammar I-V and Stylistics
  • 2. Knowledge of the relevant linguistic terminology.
  • 3. Detailed knowledge of the development of Roman literature (as studied in the courses Roman Literature of the Republic: from Livius Andronicus to Cicero and Roman Literature: Augustan and Nero's Age) and the awareness of its connections with the development of the Greek literature (as studied in the course Overview of Classical Greek Literature for minor and major study plan, or in the courses Classical Greek Literature: From Homer to Euripides and Classical Greek Literature: Hellenistic Period for one field study plan), and knowledge of basic terms used in literary theory (as studied in the courses on literature and the course Introduction to the Theory of Literature.
  • 4. Basic knowledge of historical and social context.
  • 5. Knowledge of methodology and tools used in classical philology (as studied in the courses Introduction to Classical Philology and Introduction to Classical and Medieval Philology.
  • 6. Thorough knowledge of the prescribed readings:
  • completus and major study plan: Cicero. Tusculanae disputationes I; Livius. Ab urbe condita I; Vergilius. Aeneis I, II, IV; Bucolica I, IV).
  • minor study plan: Cicero. Tusculanae disputationes I; Ovidius. Metamorphoses I 72–162, 253-360; II 833-875; IV 55-166; X 1-77.
  • 7. Knowledge of Ancient and Medieval literature on the basis of individual reading. The list comprises minimal requirements:
