Course objectives

The content of this course will try to observe the beginnings of the Czech and European hagiographic and historiographic literature and trends in their evolution. First half of the course (6 sessions) deals with three types oh martyrologic literature (acta, passiones, vitae) and theit literary analysis. Second part of the course (6 sessions) deals with chronicles of the High Middle Ages in Europe and Bohemia. Large part of each session will include reading and analysis of selected authors (Beda Venerabilis, Regino from Prüm, Cosmas Pragensis, Legenda Christiani etc.).

• (1) Beginnings of hagiography concerning theory of literature (2) Acta martyrum Sci(l)litanorum - the oldest Latin christian text (3) Passio Perpetuae et Felicitatis (4) Passio Perpetuae et Felicitatis and Acta Perpetuae et Felicitatis (5) Passio Perpetuae et Felicitatis and Aurelius Augustinus (6) Vita Cypriani + Thascius Caecilius Cyprianus (7) Beginning of a chronicle, locus amoenus; Beda Venerabilis (8) Description of persons; Regino of Prüm (9) Christianity vs Paganism; Legenda Christiani (10) Hagiographic texts in chronicles; Cosmas of Prague (11) Depicting battle; Vincencius (12) Prologues, exordial and closing "topoi"; Petr of Zittau
