Course objectives
The course focuses on the aspects of Roman poetry that are not dealt with in introductory courses on the history of Roman literature offered in the bachelor program and that are, however, subjects of modern academic research. Attention is paid especially to authorial statements (both explicit and implicit) as well as to the characteristic features of particular literary genres.
Syllabus
  • Works that will be closely analyzed in the autumn semester include: program and authorial poems by Catullus and Horace (Cat. Carm. 1, 16, 49, 95, 116; Hor. Carm. 1,1; 1,38; 2,1; 2,13; 3,1; 3,19; 3,30; 4,1-3), heroic epic poetry (Vergil: Aeneis, Lucan: Bellum civile, Statius: Thebais, Achilleis), didactic and philosophical epos (Vergil: Georgica, Lucretius: De rerum natura), Ovid's elegies and amusing didactic works (Amores, Ars amatoria, Remedia amoris, Fasti, Metamorphoses), Horace's literary-theoretical poem Ars poetica, satires of Juvenal and Persius, and Martial's epigrams.
