Prerequisites
series of lectures - block course with ass. prof. dr. Ulrike Ehmig from the Unversity of Heidelberg. The course is meant for all students of the Institute of classical studies (especially Latin language, Mediterranean studies, Ancient history) as well as for broader audience (archaeology). Basic knowledge of english is necessery. 5 lectures from 29. 9. - 6. 10. The exact place and time will be specified in September.

Course objectives (in Czech)
Student získá znalosti o fungování antického obchodu, obschodní cesty, typy zboží, zvl. amfory v porýnských oblastech antického světa.
Syllabus
  • 1. Brief introduction to the economic history of the ancient world. Development of research activities and ancient sources: contributions from the Ancient History and from the Archaeology. Why amphorae as an example of an economic history of the ancient world? Other containers used for transport and shipping. 2. What information do amphorae give? Residues of content, painted inscriptions, types, fabrics, geochemistry. 3. Case study I: transport in the western mediterranean by the example of Mainz and its surrounding areas. What happens to the empty amphorae? Reuse and waste disposal by the example of Dangstetten, the first Roman military camp north of the Alps 4. Case study II: transport in the Eastern Alps region by the example of the southern and inner alpine regions of the later province of Noricum. Considerations concerning ancient global economy and economic regions. 5. Painted inscriptions from an excavation in Roman Cologne, the largest ensemble north of the Alps. Considerations concerning the function of the painted inscriptions on Roman amphorae.
Teaching methods

All lectures will be held in the room A 21 at ÚKS: 29. 9. 10,50-12,25 and v 15,50-17,25 30.9. 10,50 - 12,25 3. 10. 17,30 - 19,05 5. 10. 14,10 - 15,45 (4. 10. there will be a public lecture at 15,50 v  A21: "Rational future planning in Roman times: First Studies on Perception and Handling of Risks in Antiquity." This lecture is not a part of the curse, but is recomanded.)
