- Course objectives
- The course will be focused on the development of skills to translate longer target texts with specific functions (function aesthetical communicative and popularizing). Practice of translation macro- and microstrategies lead by native speakers of target and source languages will be focused on mastering language and cultural specific features which appear when translating literary works and texts with literary communicative function. Training methods develop translation competences in the sphere of mutual transposition Czech, German, Austrian and Swiss cultural specific features (life and institutions, social rituals, allusions to historical events/ figures, intertextuality etc.) as well as language, literary and research competences.
At the end of this course, students should be able:
to use correct methods and techniques in individual stages of translating;
to use correct macrostrategies;
to understand different genres;
to interpret different communicative function of genres;
to create adequate communicative translat. - Syllabus
- The attention will be aimed to following topics:
- Function of literary text and its transformations. Metatextuality and its functions. Intertextuality of literary texts – allusions, paraphrases, quotations. Translation of the title. Expressivity and its neutralization. Interpretative capacity of translation (third code, germanisms). Literary/ written and spoken language, colloquial Czech, Umgangsprache (colloquial language), dialects. Tenses, aspects, aktionsart. Modality, conjunctives, particles. Article. Verba dicendi. Direct and indirect speech, free indirect speech. Humour, irony. Language play, neologisms, experimental literature.
