Course objectives
Course's general aim is to introduce students to the concepts of performance translation (translating for performative media such as theatre or film), as well as to the specific features of the performance text by means of practical application. Further aims include, but are not limited to, development of students' translation skills in the field of theatre- and film translation. Instruction of the working methods in this kind of translation will be in the form of collective work on source and target texts with clearly set skopoi, whose aim is to simulate all of the stages of translating and adapting a performance text. After the completion of the course the students are expected to be able to work with crucial features of performance texts (such as notes of time and space in the text or deixis), to be able to analyse various genres of performance texts (a play, a script, a transcript), and adapt them to the needs of the target media, to be capable of choosing appropriate adaptation strategies, to be capable of creating a functional performance text.
