Course objectives
The course will introduce students to the basic categorization, themes, and defining periods of 20th century visual arts. The selection of topics is directed by current issues in visual arts, contemporary theoretical discourse, and the nature of the study programme.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to:
- navigate the principal movements of 20th century visual arts,
- interpret artefacts based on the specifics of individual poetics,
- understand the relationship of visual arts to broader cultural context,
- navigate current trends in theory.
Syllabus
  • Modernism – reactions to the impulses of impressionism and the ascent of late 19th century modernism
  • Avant-garde – connections between social activity and art in early 20th century
  • Czech reaction to world art movements of 20th century
  • Abstraction, piece of art as a concept
  • Between intuition and construction – the expressive and rational streaks in 20th art
  • Recipient as co-author – art as communication, performance art and its transformations
  • Electronic media in the art of the latest previous decades
  • Post-modernism and interdisciplinarity, interpretation, quotation
  • The purpose of artistic groups in 20th art
  • Transmission of art – museums, galleries, international exhibitions
