Course objectives
Course mapps the settlement of the ancient Asia Minor in the 2nd and 1st BC, reconstructed on the basis of the epigraphic monuments. The most important literary languages are presented in details. Students should be acquainted with elements of Hittite and Hieroglyphic Luvian grammar and take ability to analyze the chosen texts.
Learning outcomes
The student will acquaint with grammatical structure of Hittite in context of ancient languages of Asia Minor.

  • 1. Indo-European languages: 1.1. Anatolian: Hittite, Palaic, Cuneiform & Hieroglyfic Luvian, Lycian, Lydian, Carian etc. 1.2. Phrygian. 1.3. Greek dialects of Asia Minor (Ionia; Pamphylia). 1.4. Armenian. 2. Non-Indo-European languages: 2.1. Hattic. 2.2.1. Hurrian. 2.2.2. Urarteian. 3. Sketch of comparative grammar of the Anatolian languages. 4.1. Interpretion of the chosen Hittite texts. 4.2. Interpretion of the chosen Hieroglyfic Luvian texts.

Teaching methods
Teacher reconstructs the early ethnic history of Asia Minor in the 2nd and 1st mill. BC., demonstrates the fragments of grammar of individual languages and their comparison. Students interpret the chosen texts in cuneiform and hieroglyphics.

Transcription and interpretation of a chosen Hittite or Hieroglyphic Luvian texts
