Course objectives
The main aim of the course is to provide students with basic theoretical terms and concept for interpretations of literary works. Lectures on theory are accompanied practical exercise on extracts from Czech, and Ancient and medieval literature (in translation).
Learning outcomes
Students will gain:
basic orientation in the literary theory, its subdisciplines and theoretical concepts and different approaches to literature
understanding of basic literary theoretical terms
- ability to apply independently the basic principles of literary theory while interpreting a piece of literature.
Syllabus
  • 1. Definitions and disciplines of literary theory.
  • 2. Literary genres.
  • 3. Style and stylistic analysis.
  • 4. A prosaic work: motifs, narrative analysis, narrator, characters, narrative structure, time, space.
  • 5. A poetic work: figures and tropes, the theory of verse.
  • 6. An overview of important literary theoretical schools, auxiliary disciplines.
  • 7. How to write a thesis about literature?

Teaching methods
Lectures, class exercises.
Assessment methods
Homework, active class participation. Written test focusing on the basic notions of the discipline. Written analysis of a piece of literature (poetry or prose, see the learning materials), ca 5000 characters, deadline for submission is 6/5/2018 (via homework vaults).
