Course objectives
The course offers a systematic overview of the basic phenomena of Modern Greek phonology, morphology and syntax. At the end of this course, students will have mastered basic Modern Greek language linguistic terminology and will be capable of explaining and using grammatical phenomena they were taught, and of understanding simple texts focused on given topics.
Syllabus
  • Grammar: Ellinika A, lessons 1-10: the alphabet, phonetics, the article, present tense active and passive of 1st conjugations, present tense active of 2nd conjugation, future perfective and imperfective of 1st conjugation verbs, future imperfective of 2nd conjugation verbs, numerals, regular substantives and adjectives.
  • Topics: Greetings, introduction, family, employment, languages, transportation, weather, shopping.
  • Orthography practice.
  • Translation into Modern Greek.
  • Reading of simple texts.
  • Listening.
  • Conversation.

Teaching methods
The course has a form of a seminar and lectures. Homework is required during semester – students prepare assigned grammatical exercises and short translations from Modern Greek into Czech and vice versa.
Assessment methods
Requirements for obtaining the credit: written test (min 70 %) consisting of exercises aimed at testing the essential language skills.
