Course objectives
The course focuses on the continuity between the Ancient (Latin) and Medieval literature and literary culture in a broader cultural and historical context. Based on several cases studies and in-depth reading of selected medieval Latin treatises, it pursues the connections between Latin literature and the emerging vernacular production. Special emphasis is placed on the most important cultural centers in Europe and the phenomenon of the medieval returns to Antiquity.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to:
- discuss the continuity between the Ancient (Latin) and Medieval literature and literary culture in a broader cultural and historical context;
- evaluate the essence and meaning of medieval returns to Antiquity up to the phase of Renaissance Humanism;
- interpret and comment on a selected medieval treatise in a broader context.

The course focuses on the continuity between the Ancient (Latin) and Medieval literature and literary culture in a broader cultural and historical context. Based on several cases studies and in-depth reading of selected medieval Latin treatises, it pursues the connections between Latin literature and the emerging vernacular production. Special emphasis is placed on the most important cultural centers in Europe and the phenomenon of the medieval returns to Antiquity.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to:

Course objectives
At the end of the course students will be able to discuss the continuity between the Ancient (mostly Latin, Roman) and Medieval literature (or literary culture) in a broader cultural context of the Middle Ages. Students will acquire the neccesary knowledge pertaining to the nature and the meaning of Medieval returns to Antiquity up to the phase of Renaissance humanism.
