Course objectives

The course motivates to team science work through the methodology of elaboration of encyclopaedic entries. It provides basic orientation in sources and pursues analytical approach to the established data files.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course student should be able to:
Understand of making items in encyclopaedia
Make item in encyclopaedia
Understand of system of sources for encyclopaedia items
Interpret sources for encyclopaedia
Analyse of information in sources and literature for items

Syllabus

• 1. Basic terms: entry, encyclopaedia, etc.
• 2. Introduction to the web application, structure, sections, internal links, access
• 3. Selection of the topic for an encyclopaedia entry – archival sources, literature, alternative sources
• 4. Citation sources for elaboration of individual entries – the Literature and sources section
• 5. Personalities section – a manual for entering data files
• 6. Events section – a manual for entering data files
• 7. Internal links – interlinking of categorised entries – creation of temporal, spatial and social sequences
• 8. Pictorial documentation – computer-aided graphic editing, entering in a database
• 9. Proofreading of completed entries, corrections, amendments

The entries are elaborated in the application Internetová encyklopedie dějin Brna (IEDB; Internet Encyclopaedia of the History of Brno). The study subject is accompanied by an e learning course at the Faculty of Arts (ELF). Individual entries approved by the lecturer will be published on the website of the Encyclopaedia. In the future, they will be modified and supplemented as needed by members of the IEDB team of authors.
