Course objectives
The main objectives of the course are the following: understand of history of collecting and museums, cause of a collecting, preconditions of collecting (economical, cultural, etc.);
acquaiting students with the history of collecting in Ancient time and in Middle Ages;
identify collectors, collections, and house of collection on a collection of pictures;
Learning outcomes
- identify a descibe significant attribute of main period of colleting history;
- compare difference between approaches to collecting in particular periods;
- know significants collections and collectors in particular periods;
- analyse sources from ancient times and middle ages and current piece of knowludge about collecting;
Syllabus
  • Introduction, subject, methodology, peridization, sources, literature.
  • Why people collect, prerequisities of collecting - economical, cultural, political and social.
  • History of collecting and museums - development of theory. Origins of collecting and collections.
  • Colecting in Ancient time - Egypt, Mesopotamia, China, Japan.
  • Collections and collecting in Ancient Greece and Rome - thesaurus, Mouseion, private collections, pinakothecs, glyptothek, scientific collections.
  • Christianity and collecting, influence of liturgy, treasury collections in Middle Ages, reliquiary and its typology, Charles IV., Jean de Berry, St. Vitus in Prague, Sant Denis in France etc.
  • Prerequisities of collecting - 6. - 15. century.
  • Renaissance and collections, secular collections.
