Course objectives
The subject captures the development of the everyday life of Early Medieval society in the Czech-speaking countries based on the material culture study in historical context. The introductory block of lectures is devoted to the comparison of the basic manifestations of human civilization (higher forms of regional administrative unit organization, religion, writing, culture) in the individual stages of development.
Goals: Essential orientation in the inherent laws of human civilization development; Capability to apply the material culture knowledge in specialist processing of museum collections of historical and archaeological nature

Syllabus
  • Introduction to the issues, terminology, terms, categories
  • The oldest civilizations; Euphrates and Tigris, Nile, Indus, the Yellow River
  • Civilizations in the Mediterranean area; Greece, Rome
  • Migration Period, Germanic tribes, Slavs – ethnogenesis; Slavic settlement of the Czech lands; the first state formations; Avars, Hungarians
  • Religion of the old Slavs; pantheon, religious conceptions and symbols, sanctuaries, burial rite
  • Christianity, writing, changes in the material culture manifestations, temple constructions
  • Settlement structure, hillforts – fortification systems, internal arrangement
  • Military affairs – strategy, tactics, militaria
  • Processing of iron ores
  • Artisan production, domestic manufacture, materials, techniques, trade, means of payment
  • Village settlement, dwelling, agriculture, animal husbandry, farm buildings
  • Appearance, clothing, personal ornament
