Course objectives
Dutch is considered to be a pluricentric language, consisting of a Dutch-Dutch, Belgian-Dutch and Suriname-Dutch standard variety.
In this course differences between the first two varieties are analyzed. We also examine the spoken substandard language varieties of Dutch-Dutch and Belgian-Dutch. Especially the latter variety (also called “tussentaal”) is examined more closely.
We discuss language policy and practice and devote attention to matters such as the intelligibility of and attitudes towards the varieties mentioned. Based on recent publications and our own case studies we are mapping out language differences.
This course is intended for advanced master students of Dutch (C1-level). The goal is to make students aware of (regional, situational and social) variety in the Dutch language. They get acquainted with existing research on the matter and learn to analyze spoken utterances. In that way, they get more familiar with the different varieties. Moreover, they learn to formulate research questions have to set up a small research of their own.
