Course objectives
The purpose of the course is to present the complex ethno- & glottogenetic situation of the Balkan peninsula, reconstructed on the basis of both archaeological data, literary sources, historical linguistics, and synchronical description of languages. Students should get orientation in ethno- and glottogenetic processes of both the ancient and modern Balkan.
Syllabus
  • 1. Geographical and historical definition of the Balkan Peninsula.
  • 2. Balkans in Prehistory – Paleolithic, Neolithic, Bronze age. Natural conditions. Review of important cultures that resided in Balkans. Arrival of Indo-Europeans.
  • 3. Antiquity until Christian era. History of Paleo-Balkan nations, review of their ethnical space and languages: Dacian, Thracian, Illyrian, Paionian, Greek, Messapian, Phrygian, Liburnian. Role of Greek language and civilisation. Non-Balkan languages in Balkans.
  • 4. History of Balkans from 0 AD to High Middle Ages. Roman empire and Balkans. Influence of Latin on Paleo-Balkan languages and their speakers. Language situation on the peninsula in Late Antiquity. Migration period and it consequences. Arrival of Slavs, creation and developement of their states. Religion on Balkans. Position of Romance-speaking inhabitants.
  • 5. Balkans under Osmans and Habsburks. Balkans between Byzantium and Holy Roman Empire. Invasion of Turks, downfall of Byzantium and creation of Osman dominion – social, linguistic and cultural consequences. Political history of Balkans from downfall of Byzantium to the 19. century. Social, cultural and linguistic changes in this period. Balkans on the eve of modern nationalism.
  • 6. Modern history of Balkans. Brief history of Balkans until present time. Role of language in nationalism in Balkans. Language situation on the peninsula in 19th and 20th centuries. Codification of standard languages. Developement of Albanian, Aromanian a Macedonian Languages. Language situation in Greece. Balkans after the fall of communism and dissolution of Yugoslavia – cultural, social and linguistic changes. Today’s ethnical and political conditions.
  • 7. Reconstruction of the language map of the Balkan based on witness of ancient sources.
  • 8. Survey of Palaeo-Balkanian relic languages: Macedonian, Paionic, Epirotic, Pelasgic, Thracian, Getic & Dacian, Mysian, Dardanic, Illyrian, plus Phrygian and Messapic outside.
  • 9. Clasification of ancient dialects of Greek, formation of modern Greek.
  • 10. Survey of the modern nations of the Balkan, their languages and interference: Dalmatians / Vegliotes, Daco-Romanians & Moldovans, Istroromanians, Arumanians, Meglenoromanians; Slovenians, Croatians, Bosnians, Serbians, Macedonians; Bulgarians. Further: Gypsies, Germans, Hungarians, Turks, Gagauzes.
