- Kurz uvádí do problematiky jazykovědy jako exaktního vědeckého oboru, ukazuje jeho metody práce a připomíná adekvátnost metod vzhledem k jednotlivým jazykovým rovinám.

- 1) Pojem vědy a zvláštnosti vědy o jazyce. Bytí jazyka a jazyková podmíněnost člověka. 2) Vědecký zákon a zákony v jazykovědě (v protikladu k zákonům o jazyce i k normám v jazyce). 3) Model a výklad. Dedukce a indukce. Věda empirická a apriorní. 4) Axiomatická výstavba vědy. Hjelmslevův empirický princip. 5) Obecná povaha znaku a zvláštnosti znaku jazykového. 6) Jazyk a skutečnost. Individuálnost a jedinečnost jazyka. 7) Roviny popisu jazyka. Rozklad jazykového znaku do posloupnosti funkcí a forem.

- The whole body of two one-semester courses deals with various aspects of the programme to study language through the notion of linguistic sign. Part I is oriented towards the abstract system of language, Part II towards interpreting concret texts.

- I. 1) Polarity of abstract system of language and of concrete texts 2) Plurality of the notion of sign 3) The revolutionary nouum of Saussure's binary linguistic sign 4) The variable minimality of the sign 5) Elementary vs. complex sign 6) The sign nature of sentence II. 1) Domains of definitions: lexicon vs. grammar 2) Lexical semes: inherent vs. afferent, generic vs. specific; levels of genericity 3) Valency of lexemes 4) Interpreting syntagmata: grammatical and lexical-semic components 5) Repetition and co-existence of sememes 6) A la recherche de l'isotopie du texte

Jeho první díl se zabývá otázkou, jak lze minimální binárně pojaté jazykové znaky, totiž morfémy utřídit v rámci abstraktního jazykového systému, druhý díl se zabývá otázkou, jak ze souvýskytu konkrétních morfémů poskládat smysl konkrétního textu.
