Course objectives
The aim of the study course Social deviation is to broaden and deepen the knowledge in the field of social deviations. Students will be acquainted with various concepts of social deviations, theoretical approaches and etiology of social deviations. They will also obtain an overview of current forms of socially deviant behavior that will be interpreted in the context of contemporary society.
Learning outcomes
Student will be able: to define deviant behavior, to characterize selected biological, psychological and sociological theories of deviant behavior; identify and describe deviant behavior; state intervening organizations.

  • Specification of social deviations, approaches to the interpretation of social deviations (normative and reactive concepts)
  • Biological, psychological and social theories of social deviation
  • Anomie theory; theory of social disorganization, social control, strain theory
  • Theory of cultures and subcultures
  • Interactionist theories
  • Theory of social learning
  • Etiology of social deviations, endogenous and exogenous causes
  • Current approaches of society to social deviations
  • Selected social groups with deviant behavior; intervening state and non-governmental organizations
  • Research of social deviations, statistical indicators and current statistics

Teaching methods
Lecture and seminar - intrpretation, discussion based on study of literature, work with audiovisual documents etc.
Assessment methods
The completion of the course requires (1) active participation in the seminar; (2) preparation of a seminar paper (essay) aimed at examining the ability to apply a chosen theory of social deviance to a particular social group or category of individuals with risk behavior; (3) successful passing a written examination aimed at verifying the knowledge arising from the syllabus of the subject. For the successful completion of the written test, 60% of the correct answers are needed.
