Prerequisites
! NOWANY ( PH01102 Analysis of ancient phil.texts ) && SOUHLAS
1. The participants of the course should be willing to read carefully the given ancient philosophical texts and discuss them.

2. For the running of the course it is expected enrolment of:
a) At least 8 students of the first class which are willing to inform their schoolmates about the discussions
b) At least 4 students of the second class which want to share their experiences and thus help the younger students.

3. Also the students of the third class are welcome.

Course objectives
After the completion of the course, students should be able to:
- interpret ancient philosophical sources;
- explain main problems from the ancient philosophy.
Syllabus
  • Discussions on source texts to following topics according to progress of lectures in the course History of Philosophy I:
  • 1. The origin of philosophy and its relationship to the myth.
  • 2. The Milesians.
  • 3. Pythagoras.
  • 4. Heraclitus.
  • 5. The Eleatics.
  • 6. Anaxagoras, Democritus.
  • 7. The Sophists and an anthropological inverse in philosophy.
  • 8. Socrates.
  • 9. Plato: a) his life and works; b) some philosophical questions.
  • 10. Aristotle: a) his philosophical development and his relationship to Plato; b) Aristotle's concept of the philosophical branches.

Teaching methods
Reading of relevant texts; on-line tests; discussions.
Assessment methods
1. Active participation in seminars.
In the case of only passive participation on a lesson you will obtain 1 p., when you will join to the discussion on the ground of your reading of the obligatory source you will obtain 2 p. You should collect at least 75 % of possible points in order to gain credits.

2. Before every lesson you have to fulfill an autotest in the ELF (https://elf.phil.muni.cz/elf2/?lang=en). You have to gain at least 50 % of possible points from all the tests.

3. Individual interpretation of a passage from source texts.
