Course objectives
The course objective is to acquaint students comprehensively and practically with the phenomenon of Eastern Borderlands – their history and important writers from Lvov and Drohobych, who make a significant topic of their "small country" in their work.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this block course, students will be fully acquainted with the concept of Eastern Borderlands (Kresy Wschodnie), will know their history and the Polish literary trail in this area, specifically in Lvov and Drohobych.
Syllabus
  • Eastern Borderlands as a historical, cultural and literary phenomenon.
  • Lvov – The City as a Poetic Dialogue: Zbigniew Herbert: Report from the Besieged City and Other Poems vs. Adam Zagajewski: To go to Lvov
  • Polish trails in Lvov
  • Drohobych – philosophy, poetics and other perspectives of the place – Bruno Schulz: Cinnamon shops and Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass
  • Bruno Schulz International Festival (or the "Second Autumn")
Teaching methods
reading, group interpretation, tour of the Herbert and other Polish places in Lvov, tour of the Schulz places in Drohobych, participation in Bruno Schulz International Festival in Drohobych including the Schulz Conference, or in the "Second Autumn" in Drohobych, i.e. the cultural and social events of Schulz's anniversary of death
Assessment methods
participation in the excursion, active participation in group interpretations, seminar paper on a selected topic
