Prerequisites
Advanced knowledge of corpus work is not required, only basic computer skills. The course is also offered to the students of Czech language and literature and other filological disciplines.

Course objectives
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the discipline Czech as a foreign language and to show how to use corpus data and corpus tools in teaching Czech for foreigners. The course is focused on deductive approach (creating corpus-based teaching materials) as well as inductive (students' direct work with corpus tools). The main aims of this course are: using frequent analysis for a presentation of grammar, creating corpus-based and corpus-driven teaching materials, using learner corpora and error analysis. Students will work on exercises which will be later published on the official website of Czech National Corpus.
Learning outcomes
Student will be able:
- to describe corpus tool that can be used in teaching Czech as a foreign language;
- to create various exercises using these tools;
- to use this tools in her/his personal teaching experience Student will get better insight into problematics of Czech as a foreign language.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to the discipline Czech as a foreign language, methods of language teaching 2. Using corpus in teaching Czech as a foreign language – deductive and inductive learning 3. The role of the grammar, frequency and its using for presentation of grammar 4. Written and spoken Czech, the role of colloquial Czech, teaching of variants in declension and conjugation 5. Authentic language and authentic texts in teaching, model sentences – authentic, invented and edited 6. Pattern grammar, teaching of collocations and lexical patterns 7. Language skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening), work with the text and reading strategies 8. The typology of exercises – a tool for creating online activities and games for teaching 9. Analysis of the textbooks of Czech as a foreign language, teaching without any intermediary language 10. Data Driven Learning (DDL) – corpus as a complement to a dictionary and a textbook 11. Learner corpora, language acquisition and error analysis 12. Learner corpora of Czech and their using for research and teaching
