Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to outline and explain the typology of the genre of novel and the main theories of this genre from the 18th century on. Students should also be able to caracterize some chosen subgenres (historiographic metafiction, bildungsroman, roman-fleuve, regional novel, detective novel) and identify their elements in representative portuguese novels.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course student will be able:
- to describe some specific elements in the Portuguese novel
- to describe, analyze and interpret chosen titles written by Portuguese authors
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to the theory of novel and to the typology of this genre 2. Analysis of an individual subject (basic novel: A. Lobo Antunes: Memoria de Elefante, others: J. Regio: Jogo de Cabra Cega, J. de Almada Negreiros: Nome de Guerra, V. Ferreira: Aparicao, J. Cardoso Pires: De Profundis Valsa Lenta). 2. Analysis of the society (basic novel: A. Lobo Antunes: Auto dos Danados, others: Carlos de Oliveira: Casa na Duna, Manuel da Fonseca: Seara de Vento, Ferreira de Castro: A Selva, J. Cardoso Pires: Anjo Ancorado). 3. Limits of the known world (basic novel: J. Cardoso Pires: Balada da Praia de Caes, others: A. Pedro: Apenas uma Narrativa, J. Saramago: O Ano da Morte de Ricardo Reis, J. Cardoso Pires: Dinossauro Excelentíssimo, A. Lobo Antunes: As Naus). 4. Historical question (basic novel: J. Saramago: Historia do Cerco de Lisboa, others: A.
