Course objectives
Annotation The objective of the seminar is to summarize the basic conceptions and syntactic categories of the syntax of the Portuguese language. The seminar is divided into three parts. In the first part special attention is dedicated to the Luzo-Brazilian conception of syntax, similar to the “Valention syntax”. As there are only a few defenders of this conception in the European linguistic context, the other part of the seminar is dedicated to the basic principals of the generative syntax that uses the terminological system of the Brazilian traditional syntax. The basic knowledge of the two conceptions is important for the students so that they will be able to orient themselves in syntax courses at Portuguese universities. A lot of the students continue studying at Portuguese universities after participating in this seminar. The last part of the seminar is focused on the elaboration of selected syntactic schemes – not only in the tree modulations but also in the algorithmic and linear form. Another objective of the seminar is a syntactic analysis of the authentic Portuguese linguistic material – identification of the phrase immediate constituents. Input language competence according to Common European Framework: A1. Output language competence according to Common European Framework: C2.
