Course objectives
The seminar further focuses on general semantic problems such as the definition and explanation of basic terms (semantics, semiology, semiotics, onomaziology, semaziolgy, sign: significant, signifié, signification, denotatum, predication, argument, intension and extension. In the synchronic part various of the lexical-semantic transcription are illustrated. Other problems will be mentioned marginally – vaguness of meaning, strictness of meanings, stereotypes, polyssemic meanings, idiomatic phrases, onomatopoeic words, attributive and non attributive character of signs. We shall describe different theories and classification of semantic changes from a diachronic as well as a synchronic point of view.
