Course objectives
The aim of the course is to initiate students to think in a way which makes possible to deal with some basic types of problems occuring in the daily practice in translating French to Czech.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, a student will be able to carry out translation tasks:

- choosing adequate means to refer to an extra-textual reality
- using the basic translation procedures
- benefiting from inspiration provided by excellent Czech translations of French literature
Syllabus
  • The first third of the semester focuses on issues of naming the extralinguistic reality. Within the remainig two thirds of the semester, students get familiar with basic translation techniques and practice them by translating various short texts, for which they get individual feedback from the teacher.
  • During the whole semester, students read selected books, representing examples of excellent translation from French to Czech.
  • Students enrol in this course in conjunction with Text and Discourse Analysis for Translators ROMPRB001).

Assessment methods
Translation of a text and individual discussion thereon. Conditions for admission to the examination include: at least 85% attendance of lessons, timely submission of homeworks and knowledge of the obligatory books.
