Course objectives
Students should master various translation methodologies
be able to discuss the translated text on all its levels
on the basis of this knowledge students should be able to choose the appropriate way of translate a text.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be able to - analyse and interpret a chosen French literary text - translate it in Czech by means of the hermeneutical reading, using the translation grids method
Syllabus
  • 1) Analysis and interpretation of the text as a literary message. During the SS 2020 four novels presented for the Choix Goncourt de la République tchèque will be studied so as the students could participate in the international jury decisions (March 2020). The individual critical lecture of the relevant texts is a prerequisite.
  • 2) Presentation of literary translation methods, translation of selected sections, discussion of possible options.

Teaching methods
Theoretical training, exercises in the form of application of the established theses on the literary text, group discussion of the transmitted translation.
Assessment methods
Written exam on the basis of the papers (translations) submitted during the semester and of the participation on the the relevant novels critical analysis. In spring 2020 the exam is written online in real time, saving of the in-process document every 45 minutes is required.
