Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to understand, explain and to compare models and behavior and emotional theories on the human and subhuman level. Comparative psychology learns the students comparative approach to searched phenomena. Comparative psychology works with information from biology, neuroscience, neurology, evolution biology, phylogenetic and ontogenetic psychology and psychology of agression.
Syllabus
  • . Theoretical and philosophical basics of comparative psychology. Evolution of life, behavior and experiencing of human being. Evolution process and creation. Evolution process versus evolution theory. Psychological problem. Position of comparative psychology in system of humanities and in system of psychological sciences. Trans-discipline connection with biological sciences. Zoo-psychology, ethology, bionics and sociobiology. 2. Definition, subject and history of comparative psychology. Journey from Linnes works, over comparative morphology a zoology up to now. From era of anthropomorphism in animal behavior research, over experimental phase to system approach in interpretation of research data. Exceptional importance of zoo-psychology and behaviorism in development of comparative psychology. 3. Evolutional principle possibilities and limits. From Darwin to current pluralistic conceptions of evolution. Homology and analogy, quantitative and qualitative indexes. 4. Basic methodological approaches in comparative psychology. Laboratory and nature approach. Modeling in comparative psychology. Basic research techniques in comparative psychology. 5.Basic theories of instinct. Instinctive and learned behavior. Theory of motivation and behavior on sub-human and human level. Consummation and appetence behavior. Ritual. Intentional movements. Experimental research of motivation in animal behavior. 6. Comparative characteristics of emotional behavior. Aggression, aggressive behavior. Comparison of aggression on human and subhuman level. Types, mechanisms and coping mechanisms of aggression. Theory of aggression. 7. Comparative characteristics of socialization and social behavior. Game on subhuman and human level, meaning and comparison of data. 9. Reproductive behavior, Offspring care, territorial behavior. 10. Abnormal behavior on subhuman level. Definition abnormal a pathological behavior on subhuman level. Experimental induction of malfunctioned behavior. Experimental neurosis. Animal model of depression. Modeling of psychosis. Convulsive states. Problems of animals in Zoo. 11. Utilization of animal behavior knowledge in applied research. Critical analysis 12-14 Educational movie.
