Course objectives

The aim is to provide students with an overview of basic research and application areas of health psychology. Presented information and findings will respect the bio-psycho-social conception of human existence in health and disease. At the end of this course the student will be able to understand and explain the bio-psycho-social context of health and illness, and use the information to design specific health promoting interventions.

Syllabus

• 1. Health Psychology - subject, history, basic terms, related fields 2. The main thematic areas of Health psychology - approaches, concepts, models 3. Development of concepts and definitions of health and wellbeing. Bio-psycho-socio-environmental approach to health, global health concepts (including moral and spiritual factors) 4. Main representatives of health psychology in the Czech and Slovak republic and abroad 5. Prevention and health promotion, health-behaviour. Positive emotionality and health 6. Development of concepts and definitions of disease, etiology, etiopathogenesis, nosology 7. Risk and protective factors affecting the relationship between health and disease 8. Vulnerability and resilience. Important concepts of psychological resilience. 9. Communication in health and disease, interaction and cooperation between the medical doctor (psychologist) and patient (client) 10. health psychology professional societies in the Czech Republic and abroad, journals, international cooperation 11. Public health policy and health-promoting environment

Assessment methods

Seminar paper, written test. Written examination aimed at testing the student’s insight into the main theories, concepts and findings of the discipline, and at checking the student’s ability to connect relevant facts into logical relations. Written test consisting of 20 questions.
