Course objectives

The objective of the course is the introduction of Psychology of Extreme Situations basics to students. Students will learn to understand in a better way the behaviour and the needs of those who have experienced extreme situations and will acquire some basic techniques for working with them.

Learning outcomes

After the course student will be able:
- to describe fundamental principles of extreme situations;
- to understand to behavior and needs of people who have experienced extreme situations;
- apply basic procedures of psychological first aid in extreme situations;
- to deepen the ability of team cooperation in strenuous situations.

Syllabus

• 1. Extreme situations;
• 2. Natural and other disasters, and catastrophes;
• 3. Stress reaction, acute reaction to stress, PTSD;
• 4. Work with above-the-limit stress – psychological first aid (work with the body, relaxation, regeneration);
• 5. Psychology of survival in extreme situations;
• 6. Injury, death, killing;
• 7. Psychology of terrorism, negotiation;
• 8. Captivity, imprisonment, interrogation, Stanford experiment;
• 9. Psychology of long-term stays in danger zones;
• 10. Family under strain – preparation of the family for separation and reunion;
• 11. Psychological and psychodiagnostic methods for strenuous situations;
• 12. Psychology and psychological preparation in strenuous training.
