Course objectives
Following from the course General psychology I, this course is devoted to the topics of motivation, volition, emotions, their mutual interactions, and interconnectedness with cognitive processes. Knowledge of these topics represents a prerequisite for all other courses.
Learning outcomes
Students will be acquainted with the most important theories of human emotion, motivation, volition, and action. They will be able to integrate knowledge from fundamental areas of psychology of cognition, emotion, motivation and volition to reason about various aspects of everyday human behaviour. They should also be able to utilize this knowledge in subsequent basic and applied psychology courses.
Syllabus
  • 1. Psychological approaches to emotions and feelings. Differences between major concepts. Positive and negative emotions. Regulative function of emotions. 2. Research on emotions. Neurophysiological, phenomenological and anthropological theoretical approaches to research on emotions. 3. Phylogenesis and onthogenesis of affect in human and non-human animals. 4. Distinctive neurophysiological approaches to emotion theory. 5. Inter-dependence between cognition and emotion. Cognitice aspects of the self-system as an emotion-related structure. Values. 6. Emotions as a motivational and regulative factor influencing behaviour. 7. Motivation - basic concepts; categories of motives; motivated and unmotivated behaviour. 8. Behaviorist and cognitive theories of motivation. Expectancy-value theories. Achievment motivation. 9. Frustration and conflict. Research and practice. 10. Volition and motivation. Action control. Effort and self-regulation. 11. Integrative theories of motivation and self-regulation. Goal striving. 12. Interplay of motivation, cognition and emotion in decision-making and action control.

Lectures and self-study. Group discussion.
Assessment methods
The final oral exam is focused on the student’s knowledge of basic theories and concepts, including illustrations from everyday human functioning. Students should be able to bring together knowledge of basic processes from General Psychology I and General Psychology II.
