Course objectives
This course is concerned with analysing selected charters and other documents originating from the imperial office of Sigismund of Luxembourg and possibly also from other late medieval emperors/kings. Attention will be paid to the external and internal features of charters, particularly their form, where the degree of influence from collections of forms and the proportion of individual dictate will be monitored. Selected examples will be used to illustrate the process of creating charters in an office from delivery or presentation of a petition to the ruler through the creation of the concept right up to the creation of a fair copy, its sealing, registration of the charter in the imperial registers and dispatch of the fair copy to the recipient. Finally, some examples of forgery from the time will be presented, including the so-called office falsification.
Learning outcomes
Graduates of the course will have deepened their knowledge of late medieval imperial diplomatics and improved their general techniques of diplomatics research.

Teaching methods
Students will come to each seminar prepared, having read all the assigned charters and other documents at home in advance. In addition, they will work on an independent seminar paper, in which they will carry out an analysis of a selected charter: they will describe its external and internal features, classify it typologically, compare the form of the charter with other similar charters and form items in extant collections of forms, attempt to clarify the circumstances of its issuing and also attempt to interpret its content within the context of the time.
Assessment methods
The awarding of credits will be dependent upon actively participating in the seminar as well as producing an independent seminar paper and presenting it at the final class.
