Course objectives
Students will learn trought lectures some known and lesser-known chapters of greek history in 20th century. We will place emphasis on political history,but we will also deal with some chapters of social and cultural history. The course is suited to broaden and deepen knowledge of modern greek history.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be able to:
- interpret modern Greek history in different interrelations and context;
- improve his knowledge gained in previous lectures about history of Greece in 19th and 20th Centuries;
- identify in a more detailed manner many important Greek personalities and their contribution to Greek society;
- gain solid orientation in crucial events of the modern Greek history.
Syllabus
  • 1. Chronology of the modern Greek history, introduction to the topic.
  • 2. Eleftherios Venizelos in Greek history 1 – experience of Therissos uprising, Gudi revolution, rise to power, venizelism, reforms, contribution to modernization of Greece.
  • 3. Eleftherios Venizelos in Greek history 2 – his actions during Balkan wars, World war 1 and catastrophy of Asia Minor, last period of his political activities during the 1920s and 1930s „Golden 1920s in Greece“, assessment of his actions.
  • 4. Dictatorship in Greek history 1 – military coups in Greece during 20th century, dictatorship of Pangalos.
  • 5. Dictatorship in Greek history 2 – dictatorship of Metaxas.
  • 6. Dictatorship in Greek history 3 – junta of the Colonels.
  • 7. Monarchy versus republic 1 – alternation of these two forms of state organization, their changes and characteristics, fromt he creation of Greece until the end of the Glücksburg rule.
  • 8. Monarchy versus republic 2 – first phase of the Glücksburg rule, interwar republican period and restauration of monarchy under Metaxas.
  • 9. Monarchy versus republic 3 – final phase of the Glücksburg rule, end of monarchy during junta, fates of royal family after the establishment of republic, characteristics of contemporary republican government.
  • 10. Women in modern Greek society 1 – position of women in Greek society after creation of the Greek state, gradual emancipation, Kalliroi Parren and feministic movement.
  • 11. Women in modern Greek society 2 – from interwar period until now, struggle for partial and complete right to vote.
