Course objectives
Students will learn trought lectures some known and lesser-known chapters of greek history in 20th century. We will place emphasis on political history,but we will also deal with some chapters of social and cultural history. The course is suited to broaden and deepen knowledge of modern greek history.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be able to:
- interpret modern Greek history in different interrelations and context;
- improve his knowledge gained in previous lectures about history of Greece in 19th and 20th Centuries;
- identify in a more detailed manner many important Greek personalities and their contribution to Greek society;
- gain solid orientation in crucial events of the modern Greek history.
Syllabus
  • 1. Greece in World war 2 1 – occupational regime, triple occupation – characteristics of Italian, Bulgarian and German occupation.
  • 2. Greece in World war 2 2 - repressions against Jewish population, great hunger, persecution of Jews, comparison with situation in other occupied countries.
  • 3. Greece in World war 2 3 – Unionist movements – leftist resistance, ELAS and partisan war.
  • 4. Greece in World war 2 4 – resistance movement – right wing organizations, Zervas and controversy of his truce with the Germans, first round of the Civil war between the left and right.
  • 5. Civil war – causes, development and aftermath.
  • 6. Cyprus question – genesis of the problem, British administration, gaining of independence, Turkish invasion and division of the island, question of the entrance into EU.
  • 7. Military history of Greece 1 – military situation of Greece after its creation in 19th century, creation of the armed forces, origins of Greek military tradition (uniforms, traditional military services), role of the armed forces in the Greek society.
  • 8. Military history of Greece 2 – lagging in military technology, first war against Turkey, modernization under Venizelos and Balkan wars, Greek participation in World war 1.
  • 9. Military history of Greece 3 – lagging of the Greek army in interwar period, purchase of military material abroad and in Czechoslovakia, Greek-Italian and Greek-German conflict.
  • 10. Military history of Greece 4 – Greek soldiers in exile (pilots in RAF, Greeks in el-Alamein and on Italian front), Greek contingent in Korea, contemporary armed forces.
  • 11. Important personalities of cultural and academic life – doctors, composers, singers, directors, actors – Amalia Fleming, Georgios Papanikolau, Grigoris Lambrakis, Karolos Kun, Mikis Theodorakis, Kosta Gavras, Aristotelis Onasis, Maria Kallas, Melina Merkuri.
