Course objectives
Students will understand the historical development of Modern Greece from the end of the Ottoman rule in 1821 until circa year 1975. They will be capable of working with scholarly historical litterature and of applying the acquired knowledge while interpreting Modern Greek litterature.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be able to:
- identify and understand the main periods of the modern Greek history;
- to know important political, military and cultural representatives of the modern Greek history;
- to understand contemporary situation of Greek state and Republic of Cyprus as results of previous historical developments;
- to assess the place of Greek history within the frame of European history of the 19th and 20th Centuries;
- to understand the works of the modern Greek litterature within their true historical context.

  • 1. Introduction - Greece and Greeks before 1821.
  • 2. Greek insurrection of the 1821 and the creation of the Greek state.
  • 3. Joannis Kapodistrias and the priod of "bavarokratia" (1833-1862).
  • 4. Gluecksburg royal dynasty and development of Greece until the end of the 19th Century.
  • 5. Greece since the beginning of the 20th Century and the Balkan wars.
  • 6. WW 1 and the catastrophy in Asia Minor.
  • 7. Greek republic in the interwar period.
  • 8. 1930s and the rise of the Metaxas' dictatorship.
  • 9. Greece during WW 2, resistance movements in Greece and in exile until 1944.
  • 10. End of WW 2 and the beginning of the civil war (1946-1949).
  • 11. Post-war Greece in the years 1949-1962.
  • 12. Attempts of democratization, rise of the military junta (1967) and its fall in 1974.
