Course objectives
Introductory course in literary scholarship and criticism covering elementary literary terms and definitions as well as interpretations of the main methodological streams.
The course deals with traditional poetics, its innovations, including modern comparative and genre studies.
A general introduction to Slavonic studies, based on the traditions of the Czech comparative approach and the study of literary genres.
The seminar focuses on the theory of prose.
At the end of the course, the student will have the basic knowledge about the notion of literature, about the subject of literary criticism, its contemporary situation and its methodologiocal tools, as well as about Slavonic literary studies.
Syllabus
  • Literature as a kind of art, beginnings of literary art and its utilitarian and non-utilitarian character, literature as magic, literature and religion.
  • Relation of literature and folklore.
  • Basic stages of the history of aesthetic thought and its relation to literary art.
  • Literary criticism in the system of sciences, related disciplines(history, philosophy, sociology, psychology, anthropology, aesthetics)
  • , applicatin of methods from other disciplines (statistics, information and communication theory), auxiliary disciplines(textology, paleography, bibliography, bibliology)
  • . The structure of literary criticism, its disciplines and subdisciplines, and its mutual realations
  • Evolution of literary methods (philologial, impressionistic, biographical,psychological, Geisteswissenschaft, intuitivism, immanent/autonomous methods, Russian formalism, New Criticism, structuralism, phenomenology, hermneutics,deconstruction, poststructuralism and postmodernism).
  • The relation of the history of literature and literary methods with special regard to the situation of interwar Czechoslovakia, the traditions of the Prague Linguistic Circle, Roman Jakobson, Vilém Mathesius, René Wellek
  • The problems of the confrontation of various methods.
  • Contemporary situation of literary criticism.
  • Literary axiology, its methods and genres. Written exam.
Assessment: written test/e-test, 3 blocks of questions (3 x 15 pts). Grading scale: A 45–40 pts, B 39–37 pts, C 36–33 pts, D 32–30 pts, E 29–27 pts, F 26–0 pts.
